- Full tuition and non-refundable charges, plus a flat academic allowance. The listed ₹86,000 is the first-year allowance; the tuition component is on top of it and is not a fixed number.
Who can apply
- You must be an SC student with total annual family income from all sources up to ₹8,00,000, admitted to a full-time prescribed course at one of the institutions notified by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
- ⚠️ A fresh scholarship is awarded ONLY to first-year students. Students in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year are not eligible for a fresh award — this is the rule that most often surprises applicants.
- Income has to be certified: a self-employed parent or guardian needs a certificate from a revenue officer not below the rank of Tehsildar; an employed one needs a certificate from their employer, plus a consolidated revenue certificate for any other income.
- Notified institutions are the IIMs, IITs, IIITs, AIIMSs, NITs, NIFTs, NIDs, IHMs, NLUs and other Central Government institutions, plus NAAC A++/A+ institutions, the NIRF top 100 and Institutions of National Importance — each subject to being included in the scheme.
- The benefit does not go to more than 2 siblings in a family; you sign an affidavit at your institution.
How the slots work
- Each notified institution gets a number of slots per course. If more eligible students apply than there are slots, selection is by the institution's own admission-criteria merit list — for first-year entrants, the entrance examination merit list.
- If two students are tied for the last slot, the one with the lower family income gets it.
- 30% of an institution's slots are reserved for eligible SC girl students on their own inter-se merit, over and above any who make the general list.
- SC students who do not get a slot remain eligible for the ordinary Post-Matric Scholarship run through their State Government.
- The scheme was capped at 21,500 scholarships across 2021-22 to 2025-26, of which 4,500 were for 2025-26.
How to apply
- Apply online on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at https://scholarships.gov.in/ — it is the only route. Applications sent directly to the ministry or the institute are not accepted.
- One Time Registration (OTR) comes first. You register once at https://scholarships.gov.in/otrapplication/ with Aadhaar-based e-KYC and get an OTR number, then use it for this and every other NSP scholarship, this year and in later years.
- There is no application fee.
- After you submit, your institute verifies the application, and then the district/state/ministry nodal officer verifies it. Both happen after the student deadline and neither is something you can do for them — submit early enough that they have time.

- Your deadline is the first of four. The three after it belong to your institute and to the verifying officers, and the schedule is published by NSP.
- ⚠️ An application your institute never verifies is not an application. Submit early and then confirm with your institute that they have verified it.
