More information
What you get
| Component | What is paid |
|---|---|
| Admission fee, tuition fee and other non-refundable charges | Full at Government institutes; ceiling of ₹2,50,000 per year per student at private-sector institutes |
| Books and stationery | ₹5,000 per year, no bills or vouchers required |
| Stipend | ₹3,000 per month |

Who can apply
- You must be a Scheduled Tribe student who has secured admission in one of the institutions and courses approved and notified by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, at graduate or post-graduate level — professional fields such as management, medicine and science, engineering and technology, humanities, law and social science.
- Total family income from all sources must not exceed ₹6,00,000 per year.
How family income is counted — the rules that catch people out
- If both your father and mother work, both their incomes from all sources are added together.
- The income of any OTHER earning member of the family — a brother, a sister, a grandparent — is NOT counted.
- If only one parent is alive, only that parent's income counts, and again no sibling's income is added.
- If you are an orphan supported by a guardian, the income criterion does not apply to you at all.
- If you are married, your spouse's income IS added.
- ⚠️ Income here means GROSS income from every source — salary, interest, house property, business, agriculture, anything else. It is not taxable income: the deductions and exemptions of the Income Tax Act, including section 10 and section 80, do not apply.
- For a course running more than one year, the income certificate is taken once, at the time of admission.
How to apply
- Apply online on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at https://scholarships.gov.in/ — it is the only route. Applications sent directly to the ministry or the institute are not accepted.
- One Time Registration (OTR) comes first. You register once at https://scholarships.gov.in/otrapplication/ with Aadhaar-based e-KYC and get an OTR number, then use it for this and every other NSP scholarship, this year and in later years.
- There is no application fee.
- After you submit, your institute verifies the application, and then the district/state/ministry nodal officer verifies it. Both happen after the student deadline and neither is something you can do for them — submit early enough that they have time.
The deadlines that follow yours
| Stage | Last date |
|---|---|
| Student application | 31 October 2026 |
| Defective application verification | 15 November 2026 |
| Institute verification | 15 November 2026 |
| DNO / SNO / MNO verification | 30 November 2026 |
- Your deadline is the first of four. The three after it belong to your institute and to the verifying officers, and the schedule is published by NSP.
- ⚠️ An application your institute never verifies is not an application. Submit early and then confirm with your institute that they have verified it.
