Who can apply
- You must be above the 80th percentile of successful candidates in your stream, from your own Board of Examination, in class 12 of the 10+2 pattern or equivalent.
- Gross parental or family income up to ₹4,50,000 per year. The income certificate is required only from fresh applicants.
- You must be pursuing a regular degree course — NOT correspondence, NOT distance mode, and NOT a diploma.
- Your college or institution must be recognised by AICTE and the relevant regulatory body, and hold a valid AISHE code. You can check it at https://aishe.gov.in/aishe/aisheCode
- ⚠️ You must not be availing any other merit scholarship, State-run scholarship, fee waiver or reimbursement scheme.
- Changing your college is allowed and does not end the scholarship, as long as the course and the new institution have a valid AISHE code.
How the 82,000 scholarships are shared out
- A maximum of 82,000 fresh scholarships a year. They are divided among the State Education Boards by each State's population aged 18-25, after separating the CBSE and ICSE shares by the number of students passing out.
- 50% of the scholarships are earmarked for girls.
- Within a Board's allocation, the scholarships are split between Humanities, Science and Commerce pass-outs in the ratio 3:3:1.
- Reserved categories get the Central Reservation Policy — 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 27% OBC, and 5% horizontal reservation for students with benchmark disabilities (40% or more) across all categories.
- Where a category or a State quota is not filled, the unused slots move to other categories so that the maximum number of students benefit.
- Of the slots earmarked for the UTs of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, 3% are for students from Ladakh.
How to apply
- Apply online on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at https://scholarships.gov.in/ — it is the only route. Applications sent directly to the ministry or the institute are not accepted.
- One Time Registration (OTR) comes first. You register once at https://scholarships.gov.in/otrapplication/ with Aadhaar-based e-KYC and get an OTR number, then use it for this and every other NSP scholarship, this year and in later years.
- There is no application fee.
- After you submit, your institute verifies the application, and then the district/state/ministry nodal officer verifies it. Both happen after the student deadline and neither is something you can do for them — submit early enough that they have time.
- Caste and educational qualifications are verified through DigiLocker.
- Verification is at two levels — first your institute, then your State Higher Education Department or the state nodal agency — for fresh and renewal applicants alike.
