More information
What you get
| Component | What is paid |
|---|---|
| Tuition fee and non-refundable charges | Full — capped at ₹2,00,000 a year per student at private-sector institutions |
| Living expenses | ₹3,000 per month |
| Books and stationery | ₹5,000 per year |
| Computer / laptop with UPS and printer | Up to ₹45,000, once during the course |
- This is the fullest award on the National Scholarship Portal: the whole cost of studying at a notified institution, not a fixed sum.
- The tuition ceiling applies to private-sector institutions only. At a government institution the full fee is paid with no cap.
- For Commercial Pilot Training and Type Rating courses at private-sector flying clubs, the tuition ceiling is ₹3,72,000 per year per student instead of ₹2,00,000.
Who can apply
- You must belong to the OBC, EBC or DNT category, with total annual family income from all sources up to ₹2,50,000.
- You must have secured admission to a full-time prescribed course at one of the institutions notified by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, through that institution's ordinary selection process.
- ⚠️ Only notified institutions count. These are the IIMs, IITs, IIITs, AIIMSs, NITs, NIFTs, NIDs, Indian Institutes of Hotel Management, National Law Universities and other Central Government institutions.
- An institution outside those categories qualifies only if it is NAAC A++ or A+ accredited, in the NIRF top 100, or an Institution of National Importance — and in every case it has to have been included in the scheme. The list, with the slots given to each institution, is notified by the Department each year.
- The benefit does not go to more than 2 siblings in a family; you sign an affidavit at your institution to that effect.
- As the fund is mainly earmarked for OBC, preference is given to OBC students.
How the slots work — this is what decides whether you get it
- Each notified institution is given a number of slots per course. If more eligible students apply than there are slots, the scholarship goes to the top students on the institution's own admission-criteria merit list.
- If two students are tied for the last slot, the one with the lower family income gets it.
- 30% of an institution's slots are reserved for eligible girl students on their own inter-se merit, over and above any girls who make the general merit list. If there are not enough girl applicants, those slots go to boys.
- If the first-year applicants do not fill an institution's slots, the balance is offered to students in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year on the previous year's results, with priority to those who have more years left to complete.
- Students from these categories who do not get a slot remain eligible for the ordinary Post-Matric Scholarship run through their State Government.
How to apply
- Apply online on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at https://scholarships.gov.in/ — it is the only route. Applications sent directly to the ministry or the institute are not accepted.
- One Time Registration (OTR) comes first. You register once at https://scholarships.gov.in/otrapplication/ with Aadhaar-based e-KYC and get an OTR number, then use it for this and every other NSP scholarship, this year and in later years.
- There is no application fee.
- After you submit, your institute verifies the application, and then the district/state/ministry nodal officer verifies it. Both happen after the student deadline and neither is something you can do for them — submit early enough that they have time.
- Your institution verifies only as many applications as it has slots. The last date for institutional verification under the scheme guidelines is 31 October each year.
The deadlines that follow yours
| Stage | Last date |
|---|---|
| Student application | 31 October 2026 |
| Defective application verification | 15 November 2026 |
| Institute verification | 15 November 2026 |
| DNO / SNO / MNO verification | 30 November 2026 |
- Your deadline is the first of four. The three after it belong to your institute and to the verifying officers, and the schedule is published by NSP.
- ⚠️ An application your institute never verifies is not an application. Submit early and then confirm with your institute that they have verified it.
