More information
⚠️ Four different schemes share the name "PM Scholarship Scheme"
- This one is for the wards and widows of Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles personnel — CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, NSG and Assam Rifles.
- The Ministry of Home Affairs runs a SECOND scheme on the same portal, under the same guideline, for the dependent wards of State and UT Police personnel martyred during terror or naxal attacks. That is a separate scholarship with its own 500 places.
- The Ministry of Railways runs its own for wards of RPF and RPSF personnel, and the Ministry of Defence runs one for ex-servicemen's wards which is NOT on this portal at all.
- Applying under the wrong one is a rejected application, not a redirected one.
What you get
| Student | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Female students | ₹3,000 | ₹36,000 |
| Male students | ₹2,500 | ₹30,000 |
- Paid annually after selection, for the duration of the course — up to five years, depending on the course and its regulator.
- Everyone selected under the fresh category also receives a personal letter from the Prime Minister, in an appropriate language.
The 2,000 places, and why half cannot move
- 2,000 new scholarships are granted each academic year, on top of renewals from previous years.
- ⚠️ They are split 1,000 for boys and 1,000 for girls, and the two quotas are NOT interchangeable. The guideline gives its own example: if only 750 applications are received from boys, the remaining 250 places are NOT given to girls — they stay unused.
Who can apply
- Wards and widows of deceased CAPF and Assam Rifles personnel who died in harness or on election duty; wards of personnel disabled due to causes attributable to Government service; and wards of ex-personnel in receipt of Gallantry Awards.
- Wards and widows of retired and serving CAPF and AR personnel below Officer Rank (PBOR).
- At least 60% marks in the Minimum Entry Qualification for your course. For renewals, you must instead pass each subsequent year with at least 50%.
- ⚠️ The scholarship is admissible for only TWO children per family.
- There is no rank restriction for the higher-priority categories. Your marital status does not affect eligibility.
- There is NO family income limit on this scheme — the guideline sets none.
Which courses, and what counts as your Minimum Entry Qualification
| Course | Minimum Entry Qualification |
|---|---|
| MBBS | Class 12 |
| B.E. / B.Tech | Class 12, or a diploma for lateral entry |
| B.Ed., MBA | Graduation |
- Only FIRST professional degree courses, recognised by the relevant regulator (AICTE, MCI, UGC and similar) — Engineering, Medicine, Dental, Veterinary, BBA, BCA, B.Pharma, B.Sc (Nursing, Agriculture etc.), MBA and MCA.
- The Minimum Entry Qualification differs by course, and 60% is measured in whichever one applies to yours.
- Students admitted to the 2nd year of a technical or professional bachelor's degree through LATERAL ENTRY after a diploma are eligible.
- If you passed class 12 from CBSE, the percentage is calculated on your best five subjects out of 500.
If there are more applicants than places
| Order | Criterion |
|---|---|
| 1 | Your category under PMSS |
| 2 | Percentage obtained in the Minimum Entry Qualification examination |
| 3 | Age of candidate — the older is preferred |
| 4 | Rank of the parent — the lower rank is preferred |
- Fresh applications are shortlisted in this order of preference. The guideline also defines lettered priority categories A to G; those sit above these criteria and are not reproduced here because that table could not be read reliably from the scanned document — check it in the guideline PDF linked on this page.
How to apply
- Apply online on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at https://scholarships.gov.in/ — it is the only route. Applications sent directly to the ministry or the institute are not accepted.
- One Time Registration (OTR) comes first. You register once at https://scholarships.gov.in/otrapplication/ with Aadhaar-based e-KYC and get an OTR number, then use it for this and every other NSP scholarship, this year and in later years.
- There is no application fee.
- The scholarship is credited directly into your own bank account, so keep it active and Aadhaar-seeded.
The deadlines that follow yours
| Stage | Last date |
|---|---|
| Student application | 31 October 2026 |
| Defective application verification | 15 November 2026 |
| Institute verification | 15 November 2026 |
| DNO / SNO / MNO verification | 30 November 2026 |
- Your deadline is the first of four. The three after it belong to your institute and to the verifying officers, and the schedule is published by NSP.
- ⚠️ An application your institute never verifies is not an application. Submit early and then confirm with your institute that they have verified it.
