More information
Who this is for
- You must fall into at least one of these four categories: you are an orphan; or either or both of your parents died of Covid-19; or you are the ward of a member of the Armed Forces or Central Paramilitary Forces martyred in action; or a parent is suffering from a critical life-threatening disease such as cancer, or died or was severely disabled (above 80%, as per the RPwD Act 2016) in an accident.
- AND family income from all sources must not be more than ₹8,00,000 in the financial year of the application, with a valid State/UT income certificate.
- AND you must currently be studying at an AICTE-approved institution and course, at degree or diploma level, in regular mode — first, second, third or fourth year.
- ⚠️ AND you must NOT be receiving any Central Government, State Government or AICTE-sponsored scholarship. Holding another government scholarship disqualifies you.
What you get
- ₹50,000 per year, as a lump sum by DBT, towards college fees, a computer, stationery, books, equipment and software. Nothing additional is paid in place of hostel or medical charges.
- A degree student admitted in the first year gets it for up to 4 years. If you are already in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year, the scholarship runs for 3, 2 or 1 year respectively — one for each year you have left.
- A diploma student gets up to 3 years, reduced to 2 or 1 if you are already in the 2nd or 3rd year.
How many are awarded, and how they are ranked
- A maximum of 2,000 scholarships a year — 1,000 for degree students and 1,000 for diploma students.
- Selection at degree level is on merit in the qualifying examination, i.e. the percentage of marks in class 12 or equivalent. Ties are broken first on the class 10 percentage.
How to apply
- Apply online on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at https://scholarships.gov.in/ — it is the only route. Applications sent directly to the ministry or the institute are not accepted.
- One Time Registration (OTR) comes first. You register once at https://scholarships.gov.in/otrapplication/ with Aadhaar-based e-KYC and get an OTR number, then use it for this and every other NSP scholarship, this year and in later years.
- There is no application fee.
- After you submit, your institute verifies the application, and then the district/state/ministry nodal officer verifies it. Both happen after the student deadline and neither is something you can do for them — submit early enough that they have time.
- AICTE also publishes a notice on https://www.aicte-india.org when the cycle opens. The dates that govern the application are the NSP ones on this page.
The deadlines that follow yours
| Stage | Last date |
|---|---|
| Student application | 31 October 2026 |
| Defective application verification | 15 November 2026 |
| Institute verification | 15 November 2026 |
| DNO / SNO / MNO verification | 30 November 2026 |
- Your deadline is the first of four. The three after it belong to your institute and to the verifying officers, and the schedule is published by NSP.
- ⚠️ An application your institute never verifies is not an application. Submit early and then confirm with your institute that they have verified it.
