More information
What you get — the largest disability scholarship on the portal
| Component | What is paid |
|---|---|
| Admission fee and tuition fee paid to the institution | Up to ₹1,90,000 per year, against the actual amount |
| Miscellaneous fees — library, sports, medical examination and similar | Up to ₹10,000 per year, against the actual amount |
| Computer or laptop with accessories | ₹45,000, once, in the first year of the course |
| Aids and assistive devices for your disability | ₹30,000, once, in the first year of the course |
| Maintenance allowance — hosteller | ₹3,000 per month |
| Maintenance allowance — day-scholar | ₹1,500 per month |
| Special allowances — reader, escort, helper and similar | ₹2,000 per month |
| Book allowance | ₹5,000 per year |
- Paid by DBT. The listed ₹1,90,000 is the annual ceiling on tuition and admission fee reimbursement, against the actual amount; everything below is on top of it.
- The laptop and assistive-device grants are reimbursements — you must submit the bill or receipt to claim them.
Who can apply
- You must be pursuing a graduate or post-graduate degree or diploma at one of the Institutes of Excellence in Education notified by the Department. The list is Annexure-I of the scheme guidelines, and the Department adds to or removes from it as required.
- Parental income from all sources must not exceed ₹8,00,000 per year — a much higher ceiling than the pre-matric and post-matric components, which stop at ₹2.5 lakh.
- ⚠️ Distance-learning, part-time and weekend courses are not admissible under any stream.
- ⚠️ The award can be made only ONCE in a lifetime. It cannot be considered a second or subsequent time.
- There are only 300 slots, renewals included — the scarcest award of the three.
Reimbursement for assistive devices — the fine print
- The ₹30,000 assistive-device grant is paid only against the approved Comprehensive List of Aids and Assistive Devices notified by the Government of India (O.M. Z-11012/3/2020-DD-I (13119) dated 09.07.2024, and any later notification).
- Buy from that list, and keep the bills and vouchers — reimbursement is made on the documents you submit.
Conditions that apply to every DEPwD scholarship
- Open only to Indian nationals with a benchmark disability — 40% or more, as defined in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 — holding a valid disability certificate from the competent authority.
- Not more than two children with disabilities of the same parents will be awarded. Where the second child is a twin, the scholarship is admissible to the twin as well.
- ⚠️ Scholarship for any one class is available for one year only. If you have to repeat a class, you do not get the scholarship for that class a second time.
- ⚠️ You may not hold any other scholarship or stipend at the same time as this one.
- 50% of the slots are reserved for female candidates. Where enough eligible women are not available, those slots pass to other candidates.
- ⚠️ The slot count includes RENEWALS. Fresh cases are considered only against the slots left over after every renewal has been processed — so meeting the eligibility criteria does not by itself entitle you to the scholarship. Slots can also be moved between the pre-matric, post-matric and Top Class components if one of them is under-subscribed.
How to apply
- Apply online on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at https://scholarships.gov.in/ — it is the only route. Applications sent directly to the ministry or the institute are not accepted.
- One Time Registration (OTR) comes first. You register once at https://scholarships.gov.in/otrapplication/ with Aadhaar-based e-KYC and get an OTR number, then use it for this and every other NSP scholarship, this year and in later years.
- There is no application fee.
- After you submit, your institute verifies the application, and then the district/state/ministry nodal officer verifies it. Both happen after the student deadline and neither is something you can do for them — submit early enough that they have time.
The deadlines that follow yours
| Stage | Last date |
|---|---|
| Student application | 31 October 2026 |
| Defective application verification | 15 November 2026 |
| Institute verification | 15 November 2026 |
| DNO / SNO / MNO verification | 30 November 2026 |
- Your deadline is the first of four. The three after it belong to your institute and to the verifying officers, and the schedule is published by NSP.
- ⚠️ An application your institute never verifies is not an application. Submit early and then confirm with your institute that they have verified it.
