More information
⚠️ This is the RPF scheme, not a scheme for all railway employees
- It is for the dependent wards — and widows — of ex or serving RPF and RPSF personnel below the rank of Gazetted Officer. RPF is the Railway Protection Force; RPSF is the Railway Protection Special Force. Other railway employees are not covered by this scheme.
- The Ministry of Home Affairs runs two further Prime Minister's Scholarship Schemes on the same portal — one for wards of state police personnel martyred in terror or naxal attacks, one for CAPF and Assam Rifles — and the Ministry of Defence runs its own for ex-servicemen's wards, which is NOT on this portal. They are different schemes with different rules.
What you get
| Student | Per month |
|---|---|
| Male students | ₹2,500 |
| Female students | ₹3,000 |
- Paid monthly for the duration of the course, two to five years. Half the scholarships are reserved for women.
- Everyone selected under the new category also receives a personal letter from the Prime Minister, in an appropriate language.
Who can apply
| Professional / technical course | Minimum Entry Qualification |
|---|---|
| MBBS and equivalent medical courses | Class 12 |
| B.E., B.Tech | 10+2, or a diploma for lateral entry |
| BBA, BCA, B.Sc. (Ag) etc. | Class 12 |
| MBA, B.Ed., MCA | Graduation |
| BA/BBA/BSc/B.Com LLB (5-year integrated only) | Class 12 |
- You must have taken REGULAR admission in the current academic year — a student already part-way through a course is not eligible for a fresh award.
- At least 60% marks or equivalent grade in the Minimum Entry Qualification for your course (see the table below).
- The scholarship is admissible to only two wards per family.
- Your college, institute or university must have an AISHE registration.
- ⚠️ Master's degree courses are NOT eligible, except MBA and MCA. Students studying abroad are not eligible. No distance-learning course is permitted. The scholarship can be used for one course only.
- Eligible courses are professional degree courses recognised by the relevant regulator — BE, B.Tech, MBBS, BDS, B.Ed, BBS, BCA, MCA, B.Pharma and similar, under AICTE, MCI, UGC, NCTE etc. The full list is Annexure-I of the guidelines.
If there are more applicants than scholarships
| Preference | Who |
|---|---|
| I | Wards and widows of ex-RPF/RPSF personnel who died in harness on duty (see the note above) |
| II | Wards and widows of ex-RPF/RPSF personnel who died while in service |
| III | Wards of retired ex-RPF/RPSF personnel |
| IV | Wards of serving RPF/RPSF personnel |
- Selection is in order of merit, approved by the DG/RPF each year. Where applications exceed the 150 available, this order of preference decides who gets one.
- Category I in full: wards and widows of ex-RPF/RPSF personnel who died in harness from causes attributed to an encounter with terrorists or with criminals while protecting railway property, passengers or passenger areas — or who died during election work.
The 150 scholarships, zone by zone
| Zone / organisation | Scholarships |
|---|---|
| CR + KRCL | 10 |
| ECoR | 6 |
| ECR | 8 |
| ER | 16 |
| NCR + CORE | 6 |
| NER | 6 |
| NFR | 8 |
| NR + JR RPF Academy + RDSO | 16 |
| NWR + Construction | 4 |
| SCR | 6 |
| SECR | 4 |
| SER | 10 |
| SR + ICF | 10 |
| SWR | 4 |
| WCR | 4 |
| WR | 10 |
| RPSF | 22 |
| Total | 150 |
- The quota is fixed per zone and organisation. The column sums exactly to the 150 the guideline prints.
- ⚠️ 75 of the 150 are reserved for women, and a shortfall in one gender is NOT transferred to the other — if fewer than 75 eligible women apply, those places stay unused rather than passing to men, and the same the other way round.
How to apply
- Apply online on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at https://scholarships.gov.in/ — it is the only route. Applications sent directly to the ministry or the institute are not accepted.
- One Time Registration (OTR) comes first. You register once at https://scholarships.gov.in/otrapplication/ with Aadhaar-based e-KYC and get an OTR number, then use it for this and every other NSP scholarship, this year and in later years.
- There is no application fee.
- After you submit, your institute verifies the application, and then the district/state/ministry nodal officer verifies it. Both happen after the student deadline and neither is something you can do for them — submit early enough that they have time.
- The final compiled list of eligible candidates is prepared by the Security Directorate, Railway Board, and sent onward to the Prime Minister's Office.
The deadlines that follow yours
| Stage | Last date |
|---|---|
| Student application | 31 October 2026 |
| Defective application verification | 15 November 2026 |
| Institute verification | 15 November 2026 |
| DNO / SNO / MNO verification | 30 November 2026 |
- Your deadline is the first of four. The three after it belong to your institute and to the verifying officers, and the schedule is published by NSP.
- ⚠️ An application your institute never verifies is not an application. Submit early and then confirm with your institute that they have verified it.
