More information
Who can apply
- Unmarried male graduates. 70 vacancies — 63 general plus 7 reserved for wards of battle casualties.
- Age 19 to 25 years as on 1 January 2027 — born not before 2 January 2002 and not after 1 January 2008, both dates included.
- Your date of birth is taken only from the matriculation or secondary school certificate as it reads on the date you apply. No later correction is considered.
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognised university.
- Nationality: a citizen of India, of Nepal, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or the listed East African countries and Vietnam intending to settle permanently in India — the last group needs a Government of India eligibility certificate; Gorkha subjects of Nepal do not.
- ⚠️ You may attend only ONE SSB for this cycle — either as a CDSE candidate for SSC (Tech) Men-125, or for this NCC Special Entry-125. You give an undertaking to that effect in the online declaration.
The NCC certificate conditions
- You must have served at least two or three years, as applicable, in the Senior Division or Wing of the NCC.
- You need at least a 'B' grade in the NCC 'C' Certificate examination.
- If you hold neither the NCC 'C' Certificate nor a provisional one ON THE DATE OF APPLICATION, you are not eligible to apply at all.
- If you hold a provisional certificate when applying, you must obtain the actual NCC 'C' Certificate before reporting to the SSB. A provisional certificate is NOT accepted at the SSB.
- Wards of battle casualties do not need an NCC 'C' Certificate.
Wards of battle casualties — the 7 reserved vacancies
- Open to unmarried sons and unmarried daughters, including legally adopted daughters, of Army personnel who were killed in action; died of wounds or injuries other than self-inflicted; were wounded or disabled other than self-inflicted; or are missing and presumed dead.
- The same graduation requirement applies, and the NCC certificate does not.
- A certificate from the Directorate of Manpower (Policy and Planning) is among the documents required with the application.
Final-year students — the 1 April 2027 wall
- Final-year students may apply provided they complete the degree before the course begins.
- For them, the aggregate percentage of the first two or three years of a three or four-year degree is what counts for shortlisting.
- Holding a degree is a qualification to APPLY, not a guarantee of being shortlisted for the SSB — the Army applies call-up ratios against the vacancies and may filter further.
- Graduates must submit the degree or provisional certificate to the Directorate General of Recruiting by 1 April 2027, or the candidature is cancelled.
- Final-year candidates must submit proof of passing plus all semester marksheets by 1 April 2027. Those who cannot are enrolled only against an additional bond.
- If your final-year or final-semester examination is scheduled AFTER 1 April 2027, you are not eligible for this course. No extension is granted for a late university exam or a delayed result — the notification says so explicitly.
How you are selected
- Application → shortlisting on bonus marks → SSB interview → medical → merit list → joining letter. There is no written exam.
- Shortlisting for the SSB: first week of September 2026.
- SSB: a maximum of five days, in November or December 2026. The window to choose your SSB centre and dates stays open for 14 days in September 2026.
- Medical standards are published on www.joinindianarmy.nic.in.
- Selected candidates are sent to OTA Chennai in final merit order, up to the number of available vacancies.
Physical standards before joining the academy
- 2.4 km run in 10 minutes 30 seconds.
- Squats: 30 repetitions × 2 sets. Lunges: 10 repetitions × 2 sets. Basic swimming ability expected.
- ⚠️ The Hindi notification's table lists 30 against push-ups, 40 against pull-ups and 06 against sit-ups. Forty pull-ups is not a real standard and these three figures appear transposed in translation — confirm the three rep counts against the ENGLISH notification on joinindianarmy.nic.in before you train to them. We would rather say this than print a number we cannot stand behind.
Training, and the rules that surprise people
- Pre-commission training at the Officers Training Academy, Chennai — 49 weeks from April 2027.
- Stipend during training: ₹56,100 per month. Rank on completion: Lieutenant. CTC on commissioning approximately ₹17–18 lakh a year, excluding free medical cover and one home-town journey a year.
- You may NOT marry during training, and may not live with parents or guardians. A candidate who marries after the date of application is not admitted to training even after clearing the SSB and the medical. Marrying during training means removal plus refund of everything the government spent. This applies to wards of battle casualties too.
- Everyone who completes training receives a Post Graduate Diploma in Defence Management and Strategic Studies from Madras University.
- Training is at government expense, but a cadet withdrawn for any reason other than medical, or for reasons within their own control, refunds ₹20,482 per week (2026 rate).
- Short Service Commission with release options after 5, 10 and 14 years, and the option of a permanent commission after 10.
- An officer released before the contract ends carries a reserve liability of five years plus two more on a voluntary basis, or until age 40 for men, whichever comes first.
- An officer may resign on compassionate grounds with three months' notice, the Government of India being the sole judge — but then forfeits terminal gratuity.
How to apply
- Online only, on www.joinindianarmy.nic.in.
- One application per candidate — a second submission gets the candidature cancelled.
- Queries are entertained only up to 3 days before the window closes.
