More information
Who can apply
- A PhD degree.
- AND service as Professor or Associate Professor with at least 15 years of teaching / research experience in universities, colleges or other institutions of higher education.
- AND at least 10 research publications in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals.
- AND a minimum research score of 110 as per Table 2 of the advertisement (Appendix-2 carries the API format). Below 110 you are not treated as eligible at all.
- Maximum age 62 years as on 1 July 2026 — an application without a date of birth, or from someone above 62 on that date, is not accepted.
- For Law college principal posts, Bar Council of India norms apply; for B.Ed college principal posts, NCTE norms apply.
Posts, pay and tenure
- 111 Principal posts in all — 89 in co-education colleges and 22 in women's colleges. The count can rise or fall.
- Pay: Level-14, ₹1,44,200 to ₹2,18,200.
- The appointment is for a five-year term, extendable by a second five years on a performance evaluation by the university's committee.
- After the term ends, the holder returns to their parent institution in the Professor grade with the designation of Professor.
- The requisition received from the Directorate of Higher Education shows NIL vertical and horizontal reservation across all categories — the advertisement states this plainly.
Fee — the same for everyone
- ₹3,000 for General, OBC, EWS and others.
- ₹3,000 for SC and ST as well — there is no category concession in this advertisement.
- ₹3,000 for divyangjan candidates too.
- Keep the fee receipt. Completing OTR and paying is not enough — if the application itself is not completed by the last date, it is invalid.
Exam and interview
- Written exam: 360 marks, 120 objective questions. Interview: 40 marks.
- +3 marks for each correct answer; 1 mark is deducted for a wrong or multiple answer. Negative marking makes blind guessing expensive here.
- Only candidates with the minimum research score of 110 are treated as qualified for the post.
- Exam date: 24 September 2026. Cut-offs and candidate marks are published on the website after the selection process is complete.
- Carry a black ballpoint pen. Blue pens, fountain, gel or sketch pens, HB pencils and whitener are barred, and an OMR sheet damaged by an eraser, blade, nail or whitener is not evaluated.
- Interview call letters go out at least 10 days ahead by SMS, email, newspaper and the commission's website.
College preference — the rule men get wrong
- Shortlisted candidates submit a college-wise preference order on Appendix-4 at the time of interview, and that order is binding on them.
- Male candidates must NOT enter a preference for postgraduate (women) or degree (women) colleges. The advertisement makes the candidate solely responsible for any error here.
- Women candidates may indicate preferences across all four college types.
- Only candidates of the Law subject may indicate a preference for law colleges; only candidates for B.Ed college principal may indicate B.Ed colleges.
- If you do not indicate a preference, the Director of Higher Education allots a college and you have to accept it.
- A woman candidate who does not want a posting in a women's college must file that declaration on Appendix-5 at interview.
- Every interview candidate files an affidavit on Appendix-6, plus two self-attested copies of the online form and of every marksheet, certificate and degree from High School upward.
How to apply
- One Time Registration (OTR) is compulsory — the application form opens only after OTR is complete.
- Submit ONE online application for all the advertised posts, only through www.upessc.up.gov.in. Applications by any other route are not accepted.
- Dates: registration and application open 21 July 2026 · last date to pay the fee online 20 August 2026 · last date to correct the form 23 August 2026.
- Once you hit final submit, your category, sub-category, date of birth and gender cannot be changed. Check those four before submitting.
- Upload the photo and signature at the prescribed size and accept the declaration, or the application is cancelled.
- The commission does not advise candidates individually on eligibility — read the advertisement and apply only when satisfied you qualify.
